Hillary

What’s she up to? Are the Clintons planning a Stealth Nomination? As it seems terribly unlikely Obama will pick Clinton as his running mate, are the Clintons now planning more scorched earth politics in hope of a 2012 run? And, would we even want to see her in 2012 if she costs Dems the election in ’08? Hillary’s push to have her name placed into nomination seems a concerted effort to diminish Obama, which may fatally wound her if things go south. It comes across as selfish and puzzling, unless she’s counting on a kind of Buyer’s Remorse for Obama—maybe she realizes this is it for her—there’s no 2012, no 2016. Could she actually be trying to get nominated from the floor, to steal the nomination from Obama, who seems to be underperforming?

I think she really just feels that a lot of her supporters want their efforts recognized and see her acknowledged as the first woman who had a serious chance at winning the Democratic nomination. I also think she's vastly overestimating the number of people who really need to hear her name read on the convention floor, but there are some. And finally, it's all irrelevant - no one's going to remember what happens on Tuesday once Obama gives his acceptance speech on Thursday. It if makes some people feel better, why not?

I think somebody needs to send her a copy of Greg Behrent's "He's Just Not That Into You" with a note attached that reads, "America's the 'He'".

Obama's definitely underperforming. With the current climate, combined with McCain's lack of charisma and abandonment of his 2000 maverick mantle, Obama should be way ahead instead of neck and neck. But I don't think anything Hillary's doing will have a significant impact; if Obama loses, it will be because he wasn't prepared for the toughness of national politics.

Obama has GOT to lose the image of the Pina Colada-sipping metrosexual lounging by the pool. He takes a vacation to Hawaii. Hawaii?!? What’s he thinking?! Take a vacation to Maine. To Vermont. Take a vacation to Cincinnati. Does he realize he’s running for president? He goes to Hawaii?!? The guy comes across like a black John Kerry: a bit disconnected, a bit arrogant. In spite of his race and inexperience, he should be beating McCain like a drum. I realize he’s probably trying to come across like a grown-up, but he’s coming across like a political dilettante.

Matt Adler:

One thing that makes me wonder; every time McCain attacks, it seems like it takes at least a few days for Obama to respond. I get the impression he's taking the time to have his advisors craft a response. While there's room for that to an extent, shouldn't he anticipate McCain's positions and have strong responses ready to go?

Like the energy debate. Of course McCain was going to toe the Republican line and demand drilling. By now, Obama should have his response down to a science; "Drilling is simply a payoff for the oil companies who are already making unheard of profits off the back of the working American. They have no intention of lowering oil prices, no matter what we give them. For the sake of our country's future, we have to turn our backs on the oil-mongers once and for all, and begin converting to sources of energy that aren't controlled by greedy corporate titans in bed with anti-American dictators."

Well, Obama was born in Hawaii. If he didn't go back there, he'd get accused of ditching his roots.

Ooh, I can only dream of Obama giving Matt's "Let em' eat windmills" response. Maybe after that he can bite the head off a kitten on live TV.
